DAZ Gene Test
(Deleted in Azoospermia)
Test Information/Clinical Significance
The DAZ gene test is useful for the further evaluation of male factor infertility, particularly when semen analysis is abnormal.
The DAZ gene test detects deletions in regions 5 and 6 of the long arm of the Y chromosome which are needed for spermatogenesis. Deletions in these regions may result in azoospermia (no detectable spermatozoa) or oligospermia/oligozoospermia (less than 1 x 10^6 sperm/mL of seminal fluid) and account for 5-10% of such seminal fluid results. These mutations are generally not associated with other pathology.
Genetic Counselling
Genetic counselling is an essential aspect of testing for all genetic disorders and should be offered to patients prior to referral for testing and for discussion of test results.
